Grassroots Mapping in the Gulf- Long Beach, Mississippi (and Portland, OR)

I threw up a quick link to Grassroots Mapping a few weeks ago, and in the mean time they’re on it!  Check out their latest stitch of Long Beach,

Mississippi:

All this with party balloons!

Grassroots Mapping in Portland:

Build Balloons to Map the Gulf!

I’ve been in touch with Jeffrey Warren of Grassroots Mapping about inexpensive balloon designs.  They’ve been playing with trash bags, but were intrigued by tetrahedron balloons and my folding guide.  So here in Portland, OR, I’m going to lead a workshop to build out some tetrahedron balloons for helium and for solar hot air.  We’ll fly the balloons to test them out and then send the equipment down to Grassroots Mapping in the Gulf.

I’ll be one of the speakers at Research Club this weekend, Saturday the 19th (11AM-2PM free brunch) about Grassroots Mapping.  Come join me there, or on Saturday, June 26th to build balloons! (Location TBD).

a number of updates

this blog has been falling behind, I’m just going to summarize what I’ve been up to.

The Cloacina Project is going great.  Our work is on display in LA right now, and I’ve been playing a lot with cell phones.

I’ve been writing.  Back in December i said I wanted to write another chapter to my balloon-making guide.  Well, it’s been raining.  So I wrote about space dreams instead, Molly illustrated it.  “Autonomy and a New High Tech” its in Hack this Zine #9

I’m showing some work (at Grand Detour) and working on some new art, and spending a lot of time at Grand Detour & Research Club. Both super excellent.

Romanians to space with a solar balloon stage?

real quick, this came in via Yahoo Solar Balloons group. I didn’t even know these guys were working. The record of balloon stages for rocket launches is a mediocre one, I hope they solve both launch and high altitude wind vibration problems!

Boy Floated Away- NOT EVEN POSSIBLE

Helium can lift approximately 65lb. per 1000 cubic ft. from the images in the video, the balloon was no more than 12ft in diameter, or approximately 900 cubic feet. The boy, the balloon, and all the equipment can’t weigh less than 65lbs. Next time you want to wast millions of public money, do the math first.
